This amounts to a reduction of more than 85, metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent which is equivalent to the emissions released by 18, cars annually. It has been designed to be as flexible as possible so emerging technologies can be incorporated over time as the University works towards its ambitious climate action goals. Reductions in building energy use from energy efficiency measures offset the impact of growth in square footage. The project, which will become the headquarters of the Center for Green Buildings and Cities, aims to prove that ultra-efficient retrofits can, indeed, be achieved and replicated.
The intent is to have a more systematic approach to seamlessly integrating current multi-modal mobility options including walking, cycling, Miami Dade buses, NoMi Express shuttle service, jitneys, and LimeBike bicycle sharing systems, with future mobility options such as Tri-Rail Coastal Link, Zipcar car-sharing FIU campusand soon self-driving vehicles.
The possibility of a future high frequency rail connection in North Miami- the Tri-Rail Coastal Link— provided the impetus for the City Council to proactively undertake this initiative to ensure that the City is better prepared to embrace future transit as a vital asset that will make North Miami more competitive than its surrounding communities in the South Florida region.
The Plan will enable the City to achieve the following: Establish a vision for the area and guide public and private decision-making and investment for the next 20 years as it relates to accommodating pedestrians and bicyclists, associated improvements related to transportation, mobility and infrastructure to improve the overall brand identity of the area.
Identify, leverage and maximize development opportunities, and demonstrate the potential of these opportunities in terms of capacity, density, detailed site design elements, integration into neighborhood structure, and principles for future redevelopment around the mobility hub planning area.
Develop a phased implementation strategy to demonstrate how the North Miami mobility hub may transform over time and attract transit oriented development components with appropriate densities, mix of uses, built form and opportunities to integrate new development with the future Tri-Rail Coastal Link station facility.

A Mobility Hub comprises of a well-designed transit station and surrounding area that allows for seamless integration of all modes of transportation with a high-quality user experience.
